Shish Gumbad, Delhi

Shish Gumbad (Sheesha Gumbad), also known as the Glass Dome, is a mausoleum in Delhi, India. The monument was built by the Lodi dynasty, which ruled Delhi from 1451 to 1526.

The building is about 10 meters tall and has a domed roof and only one storey. Red sandstone and marble are used to create the intricate patterns and designs on the building's exterior. White marble forms the central dome, which is adorned with black stone calligraphy and geometric patterns. Eight smaller domes that surround the dome provide support for the dome.

The use of glass tiles in the building of Shish Gumbad is what sets it apart. Small pieces of blue and green glass decorate the dome's interior, reflecting light and creating a shimmering effect. Glass tiles are also used to decorate the building's walls, creating a stunning mosaic effect.

The building is thought to have been built in the early 15th century, when the Lodi dynasty was in power. It is thought to be the grave of an unidentified nobleman, possibly a Lodi court member.

The monument has undergone numerous restorations and renovations over the centuries. The British restored the monument at the beginning of the 20th century, erecting a fence around it to prevent vandalism.

Today, Shish Gumbad is a well-known destination for tourists who come from all over the world to marvel at its distinctive architecture and intricate designs. The monument, which showcases the extensive cultural heritage of Delhi and India, is also a significant historical location.

Shish Gumbad has religious significance in addition to its historical and cultural significance. Numerous locals visit the site to pray and seek blessings, and it is believed to be a Sufi shrine.
